Fred Nicklaus- Owner and Master Instructor Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America
History of Fred Nicklaus and Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America-Mr. Nicklaus began his martial arts career in January of 1978 at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse. His first instructor was Mr. Kirk Notsch. In November of 1979 Mr. Randy Reid started American Karate Studio in the Jackson Plaza in La Crosse with Mr. Notsch as his Head Instructor.
In 1980 Mr. Notsch left to begin his military career and Mr. Nicklaus became the head instructor working for Mr Reid.
In 1982 Mr.Nicklaus ,and his fiancee and business partner Kate Stonedahl (now Kate Nicklaus), purchased the Karate school from Mr Reid. In 1986 the Nicklaus’ opened a second location in Onalaska, Wisconsin. The Onalaska school was located in the Center 90 shopping center until the Nicklaus’ built their own facility in 1994.The Onalaska school was in operation until 2008 when a decision was made to consolidate schools and move both schools to the La Crosse location in the Village Shopping Center in La Crosse.
In 1995 the Nicklaus’ had decided to change the name of the Karate school from American Karate Studio to Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America in order that they and their staff could associate with an organization of professional martial artists and get access to advanced learning opportunities and networking possibilities with other professional martial artists.
During 1994 and 1995 Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America was recognized as one of the Top 100 martial arts schools in the United States by The Martial Arts Professional Business Association
In 1996 Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America was awarded the #1 Martial Arts America school from all 130 Martial Arts America schools across the United States.
In 2010 the opportunity presented itself to once again move the Karate school from the Village Shopping Center location to its original location in the Jackson Plaza
Fred Nicklaus’ Sport Martial Arts Career- Mr. Nicklaus was a top competitor in Black Belt sparring competitions during the 1980’s and into the 1990’s.
During his competition years he fought in 32 ring fights winning 30 times and establishing himself as a top ranked martial arts sparring competitor.
During this time he also won 3 Wisconsin State Karate Championships along with 2 Minnesota State Karate Championships as well as many other Grand Championships in regional martial arts competitions. In addition to these regional and State Championships he also won a middleweight National Championship at The Diamond Nationals Karate Championships.
The Business Of Martial Arts- After many years in the martial arts business Mr. Nicklaus takes great pride in helping people achieve their best both physically and mentally. Martial arts training has helped him realize that anyone can achieve great things if they plan, take action, and believe in their abilities.
Mr. Nicklaus is not in the martial arts classroom on a regular basis but still teaches seminars and special clinics to his students. In addition he also does self defense seminars and self image presentations for local businesses and groups. His interest lies in helping his staff become the best instructors that they can be and in developing the systems in the school so that Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America can continue to grow, reach more students, and teach a growing number of people about the many benefits of martial arts training.
Mr. Nicklaus’ main interest has become learning more about the field of human performance.His studies will help his business, staff, and students reach higher and more worthwhile goals while also satisfying a personal thirst to help individuals get the best out of themselves in sports, work, school, relationships, family life, and everyday life.
Mr. Nicklaus and his wife Kate have been married since 1983. They have two children. His son Kirk is 24 years old and his daughter Samantha is 21. Mr. Nicklaus enjoys reading, learning, music, fishing, traveling, and watching the Green Bay Packers. Ask him to tell you some of his fish stories.
