Balancing Sports and School Year

Parents… The New School Year Can Be Scary For Your 4-6 Year Old. Would You Be Interested In Helping Your Child Make This School Year The Best Ever By Giving Him/Her Improved Listening Skills?
School might actually be more than scary for your 4-6 year old. It might be TERRIFYING?
Every year 4-6 year old boys and girls begin an new school year. Some will be coming in contact with school for the very first time while others have already experienced their first school year.
As a parent you want your child to look forward to the school year and not be afraid of it
Kids should be excited to go to school and experience the many things that can inspire and grow their imaginations and their capacity to learn things that are beneficial and challenging
In order for your child to get the absolute most out of his/her early school experience there are a few things that your child will need and the sooner the better
The skills that I’m going to talk about are not something that your child will just grow into. These skills are something that your child must practice on a regular basis.
But
It’s not easy to practice these skills when many of their friends and fellow classmates are likely not on the same page
An Essential Skill To Learning Effectively
One of the skills that I’m talking about is FOCUS
Focus is a skill essential to learning when
• The rest of their classmates are running around the room and paying attention to everything that is not what they should be paying attention to

• Your child needs to look and listen to the teacher but many of the other kids are being distracted by something outside the classroom window or by their next door neighbor

• It’s time to hear the directions that are being given so that your child can complete the project to his/her own satisfaction and to the directions of the teacher

Do you feel that I’m getting ahead of myself?
I understand how you could feel that way
After all

We’re talking about 4-6 year olds. There is so much time for these youngsters to work on the skills that they need to be happy and successful in school and in life
But… I would ask you to consider this
The Growth Of Focus and Self-Confidence- Why It’s So Important At An Early Age

Young people who are able to center their attention on a speaker or a set of directions not only get the project right but as they continue to work on FOCUS they also develop another very important skill, SELF-CONFIDENCE

Isn’t this what your child is asked to do in the school classroom every day? Wouldn’t you agree that a child who is not practiced in these skills will suffer and not learn as well? This lack of Focus and Self-Confidence in his/her school situation can quickly influence other areas of life in a negative way as well

But…
Kids are kids and they are only young once. I understand. They should be able to have fun and
just be kids

That’s very true, but as they are having fun and being kids why not sprinkle in a regular dose of Focus developing skills that are fun and that help them believe in themselves no matter what the challenge might be

And we all know, there will be many challenges in their young lives with school and school performance being one of the very big ones

So shouldn’t arming your child with Focus and Self-Confidence be a top priority?

But…

Where can a parent go to find a place that can help a child develop Focus and Self-Confidence?

Have You Considered Sports As A Way To Develop important Life Skills?
Sports are a great outlet for many kids. They provide a way for young people to move and to become fit. Every youngster should have a regular dose of fitness and movement in their daily regimen
Let’s consider the team sport idea

Even though team sports can be very beneficial for some kids all kids are not comfortable in a team sport setting. What might be fine for one youngster might not fit at all for another one

Team sports can prove to be too much and too chaotic for a 4-6 year old. Kids can feel overwhelmed and not at all a part of something special.

So if team sports might not be the thing for your daughter/son, then would it be worth your while to take a look at individual sports?

Reasons For Individual Sports

Individual sports take away the pressure of being on a team and having to perform for the team.
Certainly individuals in these sports will eventually become part of a team as they continue to participate, the emphasis at this point is on the growth of the individual

Individual sports such as gymnastics, swimming, dance, and martial arts are all sports that allow a youngster a chance to explore his/her own potential without the pressure of keeping up with other team members

Wouldn’t it be great if we gave young kids a chance to take their time and not feel rushed about taking part in any particular sport?

Wouldn’t it be great if kids could learn at their own pace without worrying about keeping up with anyone else or being afraid of making mistakes?

Why Martial Arts Training Can Provide Great Answers

I’m going to speak specifically about martial arts

For the past 40 years I’ve had the privilege to work with 4-6 year olds and develop a system for them that is both fun and challenging

Most importantly this system gives myself and my instructors a chance to help all of our students develop the skill of FOCUS which in time leads to a youngster who is willing to ACCEPT CHALLENGES because of a growing SELF-CONFIDENCE that has regularly developed over time

This system works for 4-6 year olds kids who are shy at the beginning and it also works for those who are more outgoing

Opt In Here

Feeling Good and Making Progress

The most important thing is that we see kids GO AT THEIR OWN PACE, NOT WORRY ABOUT KEEPING UP WITH ANYONE ELSE IN CLASS, AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES AND THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENT

So how does all of this talk about sports and specifically martial arts tie into school

Success and happiness in school, sports, and life in general comes down to how a person feels about him/herself

Much of how one feels about oneself comes down to what they have achieved, how they have met challenges, and what type of belief in themselves that the person has developed over time.

Our martial arts program helps kids develop the skills of Focus and Self-Confidence and has been proven instrumental in developing youngsters who believe that they are capable of meeting any challenge. Our program also helps youngsters realize that mistakes are a part of learning and not something that should make them feel inept and sad.

As a parent you can better prepare your 4-6 year old child for the challenges of the upcoming school year

You can arm your child with the skills necessary to survive and flourish

We’d like to help

Respectfully,
Fred Nicklaus

PARENTS… Would You Do Anything To Help Your Child Succeed?

kids_school_worryIt’s a tough world and it’s getting tougher everyday. More crime, more violence, more bad influences, and more opportunities for your children to go down a very bad path.

So what can you as a parent do to help guide your child down the right path?

Would it be fair to say that any child would benefit from a regular boost of Focus and Confidence?

I think we all know the answer.

But…

Where can a parent find this consistent boost of Focus and Confidence for their child?

EVERYDAY CHALLENGES FOR KIDS

So what will helping your kids grow in Focus and Confidence do for them?

Simply said…
kids_school_happy
It will help them to be comfortable in their own skin.

Let me explain why…

Children that are comfortable in their own skin are much more likely to believe in themselves, not be influenced by peer pressure, respect self and others, and have high expectations.

My name is Fred Nicklaus.

For nearly 40 years I’ve been helping children develop the skills that help them believe in themselves in my martial arts school, Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America, in La Crosse, WI.

Developing ‘I Can” Confidence.

I’ve found that one of the most important things that we as instructors can do for our children to help them develop this all important self- comfort and an “I Can” Confidence is to present them with challenges that inspire and motivate them.

Notice…

I didn’t say challenges that they can do easily the first time they try, I said challenges that inspire and motivate them.

You see, I know and believe that.

Winners

Children who learn to accept new challenges, learn how to push themselves past their comfort zone, and learn that mistakes are an important part of learning and growing are children who eventually will succeed at anything they attempt.

This idea is quite the opposite of children who think that mistakes are bad and that making mistakes will make them look foolish.

This is a defeatist idea and will cause the child who believes it to move further and further away from necessary challenges that will help him/her grow into the person that he/she is capable of becoming.

Why am I bringing this to your attention?

It’s simple.

It’s because.

Every child needs to arm him/herself with as much positive ammunition as they possibly can.

Remember, It’s A Tough World That’s Only Going to Get Tougher… Is Your Child Ready For It?

That’s why it’s important to seriously consider the things that are available for you to expose your child to that will give your child unbeatable focus, strength and confidence.

Summertime Activities for La Crosse, WI Children

Your choices are many but your time is running short. It’s the time of year for parents to decide what activities they will be putting their kids in this summer.

Are you planning on doing the same things that your kids have done before or will you decide to change it up this summer? What is it that your kids want to do?

Are you looking for something that will just keep them busy or are you looking for something that can teach them important life skills and values?

Have you ever considered the arts for your kids as a summer activity this summer? When I say the arts I’m specifically talking about the martial arts.

Why the martial arts and how might a martial arts summertime kids camp be just what you and your child are looking for this summer?

Here are a few things to consider about summer activities that include involvement in a martial arts summer camp.

  • Scientific studies have shown that music and martial arts stimulate many of the same learning centers in the brains of children. Most notably martial arts and music develop the areas in the brain that improve structure, patterns, and understanding sequence
  • Martial arts training develops focus, respect, commitment, self-discipline and it’s also fun for kids
  • Kids learn something new and different that can help them challenge themselves in new and exciting ways. Kids also learn the importance of trying new things in an atmosphere that teaches them that mistakes are a part of learning and that it’s important they learn how to not let their mistakes distract them from their enjoyment for the new skill that they are learning.

So where can you find this martial arts summer activity for your child?

Consider the Nicklaus’ Martial Arts 3 Day Summer Camps this summer for your child.

No previous experience is needed only a desire to learn something new and have fun.

Perfect Gift For XMas That Entertains and Empowers Your Child

Hello,

My name is Fred Nicklaus. I am the owner of Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America in La Crosse. On Saturday, November 15th we tested 10 of our students for their Black Belts. It was a very special day for these young people. They’ve worked hard to get to that day.

As a business owner I often tell people about the many benefits of our martial arts program. People expect that I say good things about our program because it’s my business, but because I own the business they might also be a bit skeptical about the many good things that I say.

Before these youngsters graduate to their Black Belt we ask them and their parents to write what the Black Belt experience has meant to them.

Take a peek at what some of our families have said about their training.

“The development of respect; The appreciation for the value of hard work; and the importance of tenacity or never quit attitude are key benefits that she has learned from martial arts classes”

“Physically, they are very fit. Mentally, they have found the strength to push on when tired and not let fatigue stop them.

“Training for my Black Belt has helped my public speaking. I also make my own decisions and don’t give in to peer pressure.

I’ve included excerpts from some of their personal testimonials for you to read. When you read these personal success stories I hope that you will better understand what our program is about and why I say that this could very well be the perfect Christmas present for your son/daughter.

Proud Karate Parents of Julia S

“Obviously, in the physical sense of the word stronger, the activity both from aerobic and a muscle-building standpoint with the training for karate and Black Belt has helped our daughter to become physically stronger. But the strength she gets from the commitment, dedication, and perseverance to develop into a Black Belt goes much beyond physical strength. The ability to think when physically or emotionally stressed is a learned skill and the training for martial arts and Black Belt help hone this skill, which has many applications in life.

The development of respect; The appreciation for the value of hard work; and the importance of tenacity or never quit attitude are key benefits that she has learned well ahead of the typical experiences that lend to these attributes in life without martial arts.

I believe that many children have the potential to develop the attributes mentioned above and many will do so through the guidance of their parents, the observation of their friends, and their organized activities such as at school. Starting martial arts as a child allows for that person to develop these skills well ahead of the life stage where they normally would. This catapults the child into making decisions in their adolescence and young adulthood that will hopefully land them on a road to success as an adult and possibly a parent themselves someday. This acceleration and optimization of these skills at a time in their life where they can experience the benefits of hard work, persistence, and respect can only go to solidify those attributes into adulthood. Ultimately this will hopefully lead to success and a happier life for your child. What more can a parent ask for?

Parents of Julia, Ryan, and Aaron P

“Reaching Black Belt candidate level has made our daughter, Julia and sons, Ryan and Aaron stronger and better people in mind, spirit and body. We have seen an improvement in their physical strength and endurance over these three years in karate, and especially over the last month during candidate classes. Many days over the years they practiced for another sport or competed in a game and also came to a karate class or two—physically, they are very fit. Mentally, they have found the strength to push on when tired and not let fatigue stop them. And as important as the physical aspects of karate are, the most important, lifelong changes we believe they have gained from their karate experience the feelings of accomplishment, self- worth, and self-confidence.

What we will most remember include the first time we saw Ryan raise his hand to contribute to a discussion during karate class. Prior to that, we heard from his teachers that he was very quiet and didn’t feel comfortable sharing in school. Since, we’ve only heard great reports–that he contributes in class, asks good questions, and is very responsible and respectful. We will remember when Aaron decided that he really wanted this and started putting in the extra work. We will remember when each of them started “getting it” and looking strong and confident during class. We will remember the chore sheets and how those chores became habits as they learned the importance of contributing to our family.

There were many times over the years that it was difficult to come to karate—not physically difficult, but difficult because the children weren’t feeling motivated and there were so many things to be done at home. Because we made the commitment to continue to Black Belt, they have had to make difficult choices—missing out on other opportunities and activities. Teaching them the importance of following through with a choice, not giving up when it is difficult, and pushing through to a goal are all such important life lessons.

We talk with the kids often about the student creed and how it applies to so many aspects of their lives—school, responsibilities, sports, family life. Three years ago when the children started as white belts, we didn’t realize how much they would learn within the karate studio that would be meaningful throughout their lives. It isn’t so much the punches and kicks, the forms, or the basics that will take them farther, it is all of the rest that really matters

Proud Karate Parents of Keegan M.

“Our story began about 3 ½ years ago. My son Keegan was 10 years old. He was invited to a birthday party at Nicklaus’ Martial Arts America by a classmate of his. Keegan attended the party and was offered the free month membership. He immediately asked me if he could join. I have to admit I was a little hesitant at first because Keegan had joined several other groups and tried other team sports, but he would quit after just a short time. He had not found something that he enjoyed doing to see it through to the end of the season. We signed Keegan up for the month and it didn’t even take a full month to know that he had found his forte.

Keegan has been working hard every week at his classes, growing physically, mentally, and emotionally along the way. As the oldest child in our family, he has 4 younger siblings who look up to him. Keegan has taken the role of “big brother” seriously. He helps out by watching and playing with his brothers and sisters. He is a positive role model for them. I believe that his Martial Arts has helped him develop a sense of responsibility.

Julia P’s Story – WHY I WANT TO BE A BLACK BELT

“Being in martial arts has made me a stronger and better person in many ways. One way is my respectfulness towards others. If I had not been in karate long enough to achieve my black belt I do not think I would have as much respect for my parents, peers, and brothers. Another way becoming a black belt has made me a stronger person is my ability to do public speaking. Before martial arts I was always very shy and went along with whatever someone wanted me to do. Now I am able to do class presentations and school reports without stuttering; I also use a clear voice. I can do this because of pushing myself out of my comfort zone during karate class and sometimes teaching younger belts or my classmates combos, a skill we worked on a lot in classes. I also make my own decisions and don’t give in to peer pressure. One way karate made me physically stronger is that I now know that I can push myself to maybe do five more pushups, for example. This has helped me in track and field to sometimes run an extra four hundred meters before practice is over.

Positive changes I have made to become a black belt are my schoolwork and my understanding of the importance of classes. During my candidate training I had to go to three or four classes a week. Since I usually have quite a bit of homework, I have learned to finish it quickly and neatly before karate. This has made changes in how long it takes to do my homework. Now I very rarely have to do an assignment at the last minute. I also don’t procrastinate anymore. Without trying, karate has made me a better student as well as a better person.”

Reilly S’s Story – Why I want to be a Black Belt:

“Training for Black Belt has made me a better person in many ways. One way is public speaking.

I attend La Crosse Design Institute, LDI, which uses project based learning. Each project has to have an oral presentation portion and I feel that I have become more fluent. It has become second nature to introduce myself and start talking.

The drills that have helped me are ones such as the four rules to introducing yourself; eye contact, firm hand shake, speak clearly and smile.

The other drill is the leadership drill where we have to teach a group of students how to do something. Breaking things down step by step has helped me choose my words more carefully, as well as teach me patience.

The positive changes I’ve had to make are being a better time manager. In order to come to more classes, and do more sparring I have to make sure my homework is completed early. I had to become a better time manager because I have school projects with due dates that were close to karate due dates”
